I decided to get a hobby car, something fun to work on and drive. My brother bought one
new back in 73 and it was a blast. I found this car in Nevada and had it shipped to me.
The Porsche 914 was the entry level car from 1970 to 1976. A two seater mid-engine car
with a targa top for open air driving.
The car was purchased with a fresh coat a primer. Replaced the turn signal switch in the
steering column. Cleaned and lubed door handles so they would open. Fuel pressure was too high,
adjusted down to 30lbs to get it running smoothly.
Replaced clutch cable and installed shifter bushings.
Interior was rough. Everything was removed down to the floor pans. Found a dead mouse under the
pedal panel. Removed the old tar sound proofing. The rear passenger corner had some surface rust.
Treated it with POR-15 patch.
Added sound dampening on floor and back wall.
Installed new carpet.
The old seatbelts refused to retract and were replaced with belts from a 944. In goes the back pad and seats.
Obtained a used stainless steel heat exchanger for a pre 1975 914 to revert the exhaust back to the original setup. Also, will add a Triad muffler.
Up on jackstands to remove the old exhaust. Took the opportunity to adjust the valves while the exhaust was out of the way.
This is the original exhaust used to meet EPA standards, pretty horrible.
The new exhausts looks and sounds great. The extra power is pretty evident.
Removed the shocks, which appear to be the originals. After 30 years they're pretty beat. Also, replaced the rear springs with 175 pound coils. The 16mm front sway bar
was replaced with an adjustable 22mm Weltmeister.
Finally, broke down and had it painted. Anacona blue the original color. The big rubber bumpers were replaced with the earlier steel bumpers.
Side view.
Rear view.
First major incident, a valve guide broke and dropped pieces of metal in to the number one cylinder. Metal imbeded in the piston...
and head.
So, while the heads were off being repaired. I took the opportunity to rebuild the engine and transmission. New
pistons the cylinders to 96mm, givine the engine a larger 2056cc displacement. Mild street cam and heavy duty water pump.
This increases the stock modest 90 HP to 120 HP.
- KB pistons
- Mahle cylinders
- 9550 cam
- Heavy duty oil pump
- New cam bearings
- All new engine seals
- New Sachs clutch
- Had transmission rebuilt
